FAQ

What is the Striga in Gears of War: E-Day?
It's a new Locust burst pistol that takes the sidearm slot the Boltok held in earlier games. You hold the trigger to charge it and the burst fires itself when the charge completes — landing every round of a burst can down a target, and headshots climb to 95 damage, which is why launch reviews ranked it S-tier.
How do you charge the Striga's shot?
Hold the fire trigger and the weapon charges on its own; the burst releases automatically once the charge is full. If you let go partway, the charge cools down instead of resetting — press the trigger again and it continues from where it left off, so you never restart from zero.
Is the Striga better than the Boltok?
It plays a different game. The Boltok was a snap-firing revolver you could rely on to finish a wounded enemy instantly; the Striga needs a charging window before every burst, so it loses the quick-swap finisher role entirely. What it gains is burst output and a 95-damage headshot ceiling that made reviewers call it an absolute menace.
Can the Striga one-shot in Versus?
A full burst that lands every round is strong enough to down an opponent, and the headshot ceiling sits at 95 damage, but there's no confirmed one-shot kill the way heavier weapons deliver. Its loud charge also broadcasts your position, so Versus players tend to treat it as a dueling sidearm rather than a stealth pick.

The Striga is E-Day's new Locust burst pistol, and it steps into a slot the series left empty: the Boltok revolver is nowhere to be found this time around, and this charged burst weapon is what replaced it. It doesn't play like any pistol Gears has shipped before — you hold the trigger, the weapon charges, and the burst lets itself loose when it's ready. Launch reviews put it in the S tier of our best weapons ranking on the strength of its headshot damage, but the gun has a real cost attached, and it's worth understanding both sides before you burn a mod slot on it.

How does the Striga's burst fire work?

There's no fire-mode toggle — the charge is the mechanic:

  • Hold to charge. Press and hold the trigger and the weapon winds itself up. When the charge completes, the burst fires automatically; you don't time a release the way you do with the Torque Bow.
  • Pause, don't reset. If you release mid-charge, the wind-down starts cooling instead of dumping your progress — pull the trigger again and the charge resumes from where it stopped. That forgiveness matters more than it sounds, because the charge is slow enough that you'll want to pause it behind cover.

Tac-Com's weapon showcase describes the feel as closer to a charged sidearm than a classic pistol — the design even sells it, with side cylinders that visibly compress as the charge builds before the weapon throws its burst of metal bolts. The burst itself behaves like an old Gorgon burst: several rounds leaving in one pull, all of them counting if you keep the muzzle on target.

How do Striga headshots work?

The burst gives you a natural headshot window: aim the last rounds of the burst at the target's head and the closing shots do the precision work while the opening rounds chew through the body. A full burst that lands every round is enough to drop an enemy outright even from a decent distance — the showcase demonstrates exactly that on a training-ground target.

The ceiling is what made reviewers take notice: 95 headshot damage on a sidearm, the number that earned the Striga its "absolute menace" label in Destructoid's launch tier list. That's sniper-adjacent punishment coming out of a pistol slot, and it's the single biggest reason the gun sits in the S tier despite everything else about it.

Why does the Striga feel so slow to use?

Because it gave up the thing pistols are actually for. The classic Gears sidearm role is the panic finisher — enemy is down to a sliver, you swap, one quick shot, done. The Striga's charging window kills that job completely: by the time the charge completes, a reload would have finished just as fast.

It punishes mistakes, too. The showcase's honest verdict: the weapon is clumsy at close range, doesn't forgive a whiffed burst, and it's loud — the charge audibly broadcasts your position, which is a real cost in any mode where enemies listen. Keep it for planned duels at mid-range, not for emergencies.

Mods: give the charge a job

Like every weapon in E-Day, the Striga carries one Perfect Reload slot plus three general mod slots, fed by the yellow Hard Cases scattered across the campaign and installed at Supply Caches. The screenshot below is the exact interaction you're looking for — walk up to a cache with the Striga equipped and the game hands you the mod menu. A charge-window mod or a damage bump turns the pistol from a novelty into a proper secondary, so it's worth sweeping Hard Case routes as you play; our weapon mods guide breaks down how the slots work, and the walkthrough hub tracks where the campaign's collectible routes run.

E-Day Weapon Showcase: Striga (Tac-Com)

The charge-and-resume behavior, burst headshot technique, and the anti-quick-swap argument above all come from Tac-Com's Striga weapon showcase — the charging demo runs from about 0:35 and the headshot advice lands around 1:35. The 95-damage figure and S-tier placement come from Destructoid's launch tier list, cross-checked in our own best weapons ranking. All prose here is our own.
