How to Beat Svore Vraahk in Gears of War: E-Day (Final Boss)
The full Vraahk boss guide — grenade volleys that delete cover, the detonator charge, Incinerator burn damage, and every safe window in the Act 5 fight.
Svore Vraahk — “The Impaler” — is E-Day’s final boss, closing Act 5’s “The Fall of Kalona” as the city dies around you. He’s a veteran Locust blight commander of the Scorched Legion serving Uzil RAAM under Queen Myrrah, and he’s been ahead of Bravo Squad the whole campaign: Vraahk kills Colonel Elias Trench earlier in the story. The fight is two phases — the bridge deck, then a desperate scramble at the detonator — and its core rule is simple: standing still is death. If you arrived under-prepared on guns, skim the best weapons tier list before committing.
Who is Svore Vraahk?
Vraahk is the face of the invasion’s intelligence — not a mindless horde beast but a commander who kills named characters on-screen. That framing matters mechanically: his fight is about pressure and denial, not a health-bar race. Expect him to dismantle the things you’d normally rely on (cover, positioning, breathing room) rather than turtle behind armor.

Phase 1: the bridge deck
Vraahk opens with grenade volleys that destroy cover. The encounter is built to keep you moving:
- Treat every barricade as temporary. The moment your cover takes a volley, it’s gone — relocate before the second one lands, not after.
- Slide-sprint between hard points on the deck; E-Day’s movement overhaul (beginner tips covers the inputs) is the difference between eating a volley and outrunning it.
- Clear adds between volleys, then dump heavy weapons into Vraahk during his recovery windows. Save nothing — this is the fight to spend the Heavy Boomshot.
- The Incinerator shines here: its lingering burn ticks damage while you’re already running to the next cover.
Phase 2: the detonator
The fight’s climax moves to the detonator. Vraahk’s signature move is a charge targeted at one Bravo member:
- The moment the charge animation starts, run early — don’t wait to confirm you’re the target.
- Turn and fire mid-retreat. The Incinerator’s burn is again the recommended answer, ticking while you back off.
- Squad positioning matters: spread out so a single charge can’t catch two players, and in co-op let the targeted player kite while others pour damage.
The ending, and what it means
Accounts of the final blow differ slightly across sources: the community wiki describes Marcus severing Vraahk’s arm with the chainsaw bayonet before he falls with the collapsing bridge, while Wikipedia compresses it to the bridge explosives. Either way, the Impaler dies with Kalona — and the survivors evacuate toward Port Farrall into the Epilogue’s gut-punch: every city on Sera was hit simultaneously. Full act-by-act context is in the walkthrough hub.
Recommended loadout for Vraahk
| Slot | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Incinerator | Burn damage stacks while you reposition — the fight’s core verb |
| Heavy | Heavy Boomshot / Gut-Puncher | Burst damage in the recovery windows |
| Tactical | Stim Vaporizer or Adrenaline Injector | Sustain for the constant movement; Pulse Drone marks him in smoke |
| Sidearm | Striga or Snub | Free headshot damage while sprinting between cover |
If you’re chasing achievements on this run, “Okay, Boomer.” and the chainsaw execution don’t apply here — but the fight’s adds make a good warm-up for both; see the achievements guide. The campaign’s other big fights are the Brumak encounters and the Corpser pair.
FAQ
What difficulty should I fight Vraahk on?
Whatever your first campaign run is on — Insane achievement runs (For Whom The Bell Tolls, Dead Serious) can be a separate pass, since finishing the story on Insane unlocks nothing early.
Does cover regrow in the Vraahk fight?
No — destroyed cover stays destroyed. That’s why the fight rewards constant repositioning over finding one perfect wall.
Can you skip the adds in the Vraahk fight?
Not safely. Adds force your squad out of rhythm; clear them during volley pauses, then punish Vraahk’s recovery windows with heavy weapons.
Why does Vraahk keep charging me at the detonator?
The detonator phase’s charge targets one squad member at a time. Run the moment the animation starts, turn and shoot while retreating, and spread the squad so charges can’t chain two players.
