Gears of War: E-Day Difficulty Levels: Casual to Insane Guide
E-Day's four difficulty levels explained — Casual to Insane — plus Horde Siege's separate tiers, the Insane unlock question, and how to prep an Insane run.
FAQ
What difficulty is the default in Gears of War: E-Day?
Is Insane unlocked from the start in E-Day?
What are the Horde Siege difficulties?
What achievements require Insane in E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day has four campaign difficulty levels — Casual, Normal, Hardcore, and Insane — and Normal is the default. Horde Siege ignores that ladder entirely and runs its own two modes, Infantry and Allfather. Most launch reviewers played the campaign on Normal or Hardcore, and the achievement list is built around a full Insane sweep. Here's what each tier is for, what's actually confirmed about unlocks, and how to set up a run that survives the top end — the act structure it all plays out across is mapped in our walkthrough hub.
What difficulty should you pick in Gears of War: E-Day?
| Level | Who it's for | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Story-first players here for the origin story | The easiest of the four campaign tiers |
| Normal | Most players — this is the default | The tuning most reviewers played: 12–18 hour runs |
| Hardcore | Series veterans who want pushback | Reviewer runs stretched past 20 hours |
| Insane | Second passes and achievement hunting | Required (or heavily referenced) by the biggest Gamerscore payouts |
If you're new to Gears, Normal is the honest answer — it's the band every launch review timed, from TheGamer's 12–15 hours to IGN's 15–18. If you've been chainsawing Locust since 2006, Hardcore gives the cover-degrading sandbox room to bite. The full runtime math per tier is in our length breakdown.

What changes at higher difficulties?
The Coalition hasn't published a per-tier stat breakdown, so honest sourcing matters here. What's verified from launch coverage:
- Hardcore stretches playtime — Eurogamer and Polygon both filed around-20-hour campaigns on it, and our own length guide's read is that enemies delete cover — and you — noticeably faster than Normal.
- Insane is the achievement tier. "Today We Are Canceling the Apocalypse" (25G) demands all five Acts on Insane, and the two heaviest achievements in the game lean on it too (more below).
- Custom campaign settings can change the displayed tier. E-Day ships custom options that can alter the difficulty label your session shows, so an odd-looking tag in a screenshot isn't a hidden fifth level.
Casual and Normal need no strategy split: pick the one that lets you enjoy Kalona's free-roam zones without reloading the same firefight a dozen times.
Is Insane unlocked from the start?
This is the one question with a sourcing wrinkle worth understanding:
- Insane's existence is hard-confirmed — achievement text names it directly.
- "All four tiers available from the start" comes from a single secondary source (e-day.wiki). No official page has spelled out the unlock rules.
- PowerPyx's achievement breakdown notes that campaign completions do not unlock Insane early — in other words, you shouldn't need to beat the game once before the top tier opens.
Horde Siege difficulties are a separate ladder
Horde Siege doesn't use Casual-to-Insane. Its achievement text names exactly two modes: Infantry and Allfather (the harder of the two). So an Insane campaign veteran starts Horde at the same gate as everyone else — the class grind, not the campaign ladder, is what scales there. Our Horde Siege guide covers the four classes and how squads share objectives.
How to prepare for an Insane run
Three achievements make Insane the backbone of the 1000G climb:
| Achievement | G | Insane requirement |
|---|---|---|
| For Whom The Bell Tolls | 75 | Full campaign on Insane + all Secondary Objectives + all hidden items |
| Today We Are Canceling the Apocalypse | 25 | All five Acts on Insane |
| Dead Serious | 85 | 100% campaign on Insane + 25,000 Versus kills + max Player Level + all four Horde classes maxed |
Practical prep, all grounded in how the game actually works:
- Learn the bosses on a cheaper pass first. The first Brumak is unarmored and readable, but the final Vraahk fight destroys your cover out from under you with grenade volleys — walking in blind on Insane is a restart loop. Our Brumak and Vraahk guides cover every phase.
- Fix your loadout with weapon mods. Hard Cases and Supply Caches feed the mod system, and a modded Lancer changes Insane math far more than raw skill does — see the weapon mods guide.
- Bring a tier-appropriate arsenal. The meta picks in our best weapons list are ranked on how they actually perform when everything hits back, and the new arrivals each have a deep dive: the Striga, Incinerator, and Breechshot.
- Ride the collectible sweep along. Chapter select keeps everything reachable later, so you can chase the 140 collectibles during Insane without fear of missing any — the plan is in our collectibles guide.
