FAQ

Is the Gut-Puncher better than the Boomshot in E-Day?
They're different tools now. The Boomshot line includes the Heavy Boomshot — an oversized variant dropped by big enemies as a heavy pickup — while the Gut-Puncher is a standard-arsenal launcher with more ammo, a faster rate of fire, and manual detonation. For sustained campaign fights the Gut-Puncher's flexibility usually wins; for one massive burst, grab whichever Boomshot you find.
How do you detonate the Gut-Puncher manually?
Hold the trigger after firing instead of releasing it. The round stays live until you let go, and it explodes at that instant. A quick tap instead reverts to auto behavior, where the round only blows up after it settles.
What mods does the Gut-Puncher take?
Concussion Rounds is the headline option — area and stun at the cost of raw damage — found in Act 2, Chapter 3 near a Supply Cache. Like every weapon it carries a Perfect Reload slot plus three general slots, so Hard Case hunting pays off here too.
Does the Gut-Puncher appear in Horde Siege?
Yes — Carter's signature Gut-Puncher variant is part of the Horde Siege signature weapon lineup, and the launcher's manual detonation makes it a natural fit for wave-defense chokepoints.

The Gut-Puncher is E-Day's new grenade launcher, and it takes over the role the Boomshot held for two decades: the series splits the job now, with the oversized Heavy Boomshot dropped by big enemies as a heavy pickup while this serves as the standard grenade launcher you'll meet across the campaign. It launches slower, bouncier rounds with a smaller blast than the Boomshot, and it trades raw boom for something the series has never offered before: you choose when the grenade goes off. Whether it earns a slot next to the S-tier guns in our best weapons tier list depends almost entirely on how well you learn that one input.

How do the Gut-Puncher's two detonation modes work?

There's no switch to flip — the mode is just how you press the trigger:

  • Tap fire (auto). A quick pull launches the round as usual. Counterintuitively, a direct hit does not detonate instantly: the projectile bounces, skids, and only explodes on its own once it settles. That makes plain tapping the weakest way to use the gun — the round often stops somewhere harmless and blows up near nothing.
  • Hold and release (manual). Holding the trigger keeps the round "live," and releasing it detonates the grenade at that exact moment. This is the whole weapon: launch it over a wall and pop it above a hiding Locust, or fire one down a lane and let it go just as the enemy walks into the blast circle.

The game shows you exactly what you're working with: a detonation circle appears where the blast will land, and the HUD tags the round AUTO or MANUAL depending on your trigger state. The circle marks the lethal core — damage falls off outside it, though a test at the circle's edge still shaved some health off, so don't hug your own blasts.

Ammo, fire rate, and bank shots

The Gut-Puncher carries 4 rounds per magazine with 12 in reserve and reloads fast for a launcher. That volume is the real argument for it over the Boomshot: where the heavy weapon gives you one or two enormous explosions per pickup, the Gut-Puncher lets you stay in the fight and keep answering with mid-size blasts.

Two techniques make those rounds count:

  1. Air bursts over cover. The most common kill: arc a round over the barricade the enemy is crouched behind and release while it's still airborne. Cover means nothing to a grenade that detonates on the way down.
  2. Bank shots. Rounds bounce off walls and floors without losing their fuse, so you can fire into a wall and wrap the blast around a corner — or drop one onto the ground as a trap and hold it live until someone wanders in.

The Concussion Rounds mod and e-hole tricks

The launcher's signature mod is Concussion Rounds, found in Act 2, Chapter 3 next to a Supply Cache after the Cedar Mortars fight near the construction scaffolding. It's a strange trade on paper — all damage removed in exchange for a bigger area and a stun effect — but stunning a whole cluster and finishing them with the Gnasher cleans up almost as well as explosives, with far less precision required. Full mod-slot details live in our weapon mods guide.

One warning comes with it: concussion rounds can't plug Emergence Holes, which is one of the standard rounds' best party tricks. If you're running a hole-sealing playstyle, keep a damage loadout equipped for it.

The melee finisher and the "Two Grubs, One Gut-Punch" achievement

The launcher has its own melee finisher animation, and the game hands out a dedicated achievement for the explosive version of showing off: "Two Grubs, One Gut-Punch" (15G) for killing two Locust with a single round — full unlock context in our achievements guide. A stunned cluster from Concussion Rounds lined up behind one wall is the easiest setup you'll ever get for that medal. If the timing gives you trouble, Boot Camp's firing range is the zero-pressure place to learn the hold-and-release rhythm before you try it under fire.
