FAQ

Where do you equip weapon mods in E-Day?
At Supply Caches — the resupply stations placed through the campaign. Mods you're carrying can't be applied from a menu; you apply them when you reach a cache.
How many mod slots does each weapon have?
Four: one Perfect Reload slot and three general slots. Perfect Reload effects reward the classic timed-reload tap, while the general slots take the passive and behavioral mods listed above.
Do weapon mods carry over to Versus or Horde Siege?
No for Versus — multiplayer ships with fixed loadouts and map power weapons. Horde Siege has its own separate class, armor mod, and weapon parts systems, so campaign mods are a campaign-only power curve.
What are Hard Cases and how many are there?
Hard Cases are the yellow weapon-mod containers scattered across all five acts (plus sidequest rewards). Total counts vary between sources, so we won't quote one — but every case you open feeds the "Relax. I'm the Map." achievement, and the objective map's Collections tracker shows what you've missed per act.

E-Day's Weapon Mod system is a series first: for the first time in Gears history, campaign guns are customizable, and the difference between a stock Lancer and a modded one is noticeable within a firefight. Mods come from yellow Hard Cases hidden across every act and from sidequest rewards in Kalona's free-roam zones, and some simply make a weapon better at what it already does while others quietly change its job entirely. Pair this with our best weapons tier list to decide which guns deserve your first mods.

How do weapon mods work in Gears of War: E-Day?

Three rules govern the whole system:

  • Every weapon carries four mod slots — one reserved for Perfect Reload effects and three general slots for everything else.
  • Mods are equipped at Supply Caches, the resupply stations scattered through the campaign — 36 of them across all acts — not from a pause menu.
  • Mods are campaign-only. Versus ships with fixed loadouts and map power weapons; nothing you bolt onto a Gnasher follows you into multiplayer.

The city map does real work here: opening the objective map shows your Collections tracker for the act, which is how you hunt down the Hard Cases you've missed before moving on.

Best mods for the Lancer Mk1 and Prototype Lancer

The starting rifle's big weakness is accuracy, and the Police Receiver mod — the Lancer's starter option — attacks it directly by steadying your aim at the cost of some damage. Two better options remove that penalty entirely:

  • Cover Brace — increased accuracy when firing from cover, which is where you should be firing a Lancer anyway. It drops early in Act 2, Chapter 2 as the reward for the Vanguard sidequest in the car shop at the chapter's start.
  • Forged Barrel — more accuracy with no damage trade-off, found later in the same chapter inside the building across from the Colonna Hotel.

The Prototype Lancer — the first chainsaw Lancer ever built — wants the same Cover Brace from a shipping container in the Act 2, Chapter 2 COG base, plus the Precision Rifling barrel found next to a Supply Cache in Act 3, Chapter 2 for extra accuracy and critical damage.

Best mods for the Gnasher, Hammerburst, and other mid-range guns

  • Gnasher — Bayonet. The standout mod of the early game: a quick melee blade that lines your hip-fire up with the point-blank blast, deleting standard grunts in one motion. It's the reward for the trapped family sidequest in Act 2, Chapter 2. Pair it with Proximity Reload or Proximity Regen armor mods, or the starter Auto Pouch that tops the gun up while it's stowed.
  • Hammerburst — Huge Magazine. A dramatic magazine boost paid for in aim and reload speed — the trade turns the Hammerburst into a sustained-fire platform that stays accurate at distance. It sits inside the bank vault in Act 2, Chapter 2; the Hammerburst's own Cover Brace variant is in Act 2, Chapter 5 after the tank warehouse skirmish.

  • Incinerator — Cylinder Choke. The new Imulsion shotgun trades a little range for spread, letting single shots catch whole clusters; it's in Act 3, Chapter 2 near the giant Reserve Bank statue. The Auto Canister (Act 2, Chapter 3, after the tunnel) auto-reloads the gun while stowed, which suits a situational weapon you draw only when the moment is right.
  • Gut-Puncher — Concussion Rounds. Removes the damage but adds area and a stun, turning the launcher into a crowd-control tool alongside the Gnasher. Found next to a Supply Cache in Act 2, Chapter 3 after the Cedar Mortars fight. Our Gut-Puncher guide covers what the mod does to the launcher's other tricks — including e-hole sealing, which Concussion Rounds can't do.
  • Ripper — Twinned Ammo and Gas Regulator. The starter twin-barrel mod shreds heavies once you land a Perfect Reload, and the Gas Regulator (Act 3, Chapter 3) deletes the ramp-up for a slower but perfectly steady stream.

Best mods for the Longshot, Breechshot, and Torque Bow

  • Longshot — Precision Long Barrel, left of the mini mart after you find Whiskey Squad in Act 2, Chapter 2, then the Tactical Scope (2x–4.5x toggle) right at the start of Act 3, Chapter 2's tunnels. Much later, a Hard Case at the southwest helipad of Act 4, Chapter 3 upgrades you to the full Sniper Scope. A Longshot with these three mods is exactly what airborne fights demand — see our Scoria boss guide for the encounter that proves it.

  • Breechshot — Combat Scope, in an alcove near the Act 2, Chapter 2 construction site, giving 1x and 2.5x aim zooms on a gun that otherwise fights past 200 meters on instinct. The Precision Long Barrel (another trapped family reward) and Hardened Ammo (a parking-lot Hard Case near the Bank of Tyras) round it out.
  • Torque Bow — Prime Coils, found in Act 4, Chapter 3 inside the train car from the trapped Locust sidequest, slashes the charge time after stowing; High Explosive Bolts (second floor of the same chapter's warehouse, up the pallets by the forklift) buys bigger blasts with slower charging — and Prime Coils cancels that tax. Together they turn the bow into a long-range, forgiving Gut-Puncher.
